Paola Urban Mobility and Accessibility (PUMA)

A free-of-charge assisted transport service for the elderly community of Paola.
A project supported through the Norwegian Funds Small Grant Scheme.

The Paola Local Council, through the Norwegian Funds Small Grant Scheme, is presently implementing the project Paola Urban Mobility and Accessibility (PUMA) Such project includes a free Dial-a-Ride service targeting those citizens who are vulnerable that is those who are disadvantaged vis-a-vis mobility and accessibility in and around the town as a result of impairment and geography.

PUMA addresses the increased access and mobility which conventional public transport does not cover. The current transit hub and transport does not accede to the full needs; PUMA addresses regeneration and transit through the application of alternative green modes. The targeted users will be supported by an electrical vehicle designed to reach all neighbourhoods within the Local Council boundary and localities close-by. The electric van will be adapted to cater for users with impairment and will include low floor possibilities a ramp or lifter.

The service nerve centre will be set at the Paola Local Council and managed by the staff. The Dial-a-Ride service will include the van driver and carer to facilitate the access i.e. mounting and getting off the van.
The Paola Local Council is presently procuring all the relevant items and services that would be required to operate the service and looks forward to initiate the provision of such service in the coming months.
