Lija lies in the middle of Malta and in company with the villages of Balzan and Attard constitute a fertile area surrounding the Presidents’ Palace of San Anton. It is believed that the three villages surrounding the palace were intended to provide a protective barrier to the incumbent Grandmaster in his palace if a sudden corsair or Turkish attack on the Island were to materialise. This explains the original plan to have all the village streets narrow and twisting and the absence of a wide square in front of the village’s churches.
